Southwestern Route, Highway 108 (Chiang Mai - Hangdong - Hod)

Before heading for the Southern Route, Highway 108, a visit to the cottage industry of lacquerware is worthwhile. The oldest area of silversmiths and lacquerware factories and shops are on the south side of Chiang Mai City, along Nantharam Road.

Lacquerware is one of the best known and most beautiful handicraft products made in Chiang Mai. It is very popular with visitors not just because of its beauty, but because it is also light to carry and often functional as well as decorative. The traditional northern Thai art forms as well as items produced are different from those in other Asian countries i.e. China and Japan. Chiang Mai is very much the center of the Thai lacquerware industry, as it is for many other handicrafts, and there are many factories specializing in producing these uniquely Thai pieces along Nantharam Road and the Chiang Mai - Sankampaeng Road. The most popular items are cups, dippers, cigarette boxes, trays and vases.

The pottery village of Baan Muang Kung (Goong) specializes in making many kinds of useful pottery items. The major products are earthen vessels, cooking pots, water bottles, water jars and flower vases. The most popular piece in their range is the water vessel as this keeps water.naturally cool on long journeys. The villagers have recently expanded the products - and introduced a wider range of colors and patterns along with better quality control. To reach Baan Muang Kung, take the Chiang Mai - Hang Dong Road, about 6 kilometers beyond the junction with the airport road. The village is just before the intersection of Hang Dong - Samoeng Road.

Lanna Resort is one of many beautiful resorts for visitors to enjoy. It's huddled in the valley along a stream that winds from the pass leading to Samoeng District. One of the oldest resorts on the Hang Dong - Samoeng Road is Krisdadoi Resort. It is set in a magnificent natural setting, enhanced by displays of flowers that stun the eye. Baan Klang (Glang) Doi Resort has a beautiful flower garden in a natural setting. Accommodation for visitors is provided in antique Lanna-style teak guesthouses for 2 to 15 guests. Chiang Mai Speedway : The place for racing thrills where you can choose your own level of speed on a professional asphalt track at the Chiang Mai Speedway. There are 4 versions of karts for all ages of drivers. It's located at 254 Moo 8, Chiang Mai - Hang Dong Road., Nong Kwai, Hang Dong, Chiang Mai. One of the best-known handicraft centers around Chiang Mai is Baan Tawai, famous for its woodcarving products. The village is found by taking the Chiang Mai - Hang Dong Road. From the inner city the turning is at the km 15 marker. Turn left at the traffic lights just as you enter Hang Dong hand proceed for a further 3 kilometers, the village can be found on the right. The many shops sell both wholesale and retail, and specialize in producing imitation antiques, of which a wide selection are on display. The annual Baan Tawai Handicrafts and Woodcarving Fair takes place on the last weekend of January or first weekend of February.

Baan Roi-Un Pun-Yaang is a traditional Thai house showcasing Thai antiques, sculpture, carved wood art forms proving to be a valuable exhibition preserved by teacher Charuay Na Soonthorn at 225/4 Chiang Mai-Sanpatong Rd, i.e. Rte. 108, between Km 19 and 20. Ob Khaan National Park is located on the left side of the Khaan River at Tambon Naamprae. The scenic route is the road hugging the irrigation canal to Hangdong Road for about 15 kms then turn right on the Naamprae-Ob Khaan Rd for about 11 kms. The outstanding sights to see are Takataen Cave, Ob Kahaan, Pha Oy mha, Ob hai, Huay Yha Sai, Pha Toob and Huay Pong. Camping facilities with food and beverage - from 08.00 to 18.00 Pm. From two trailblazing paths, visitors can take in all the natural beauty of this area. A sightseeing information center with 24 hour guard is provided.

"Khun Win" Elephant Camps can be reached, 16 kilometers from the junction of three roads meeting at Baan Kad Subdistrict (of Mae Waang District), 8 kms from Sanpatong District. The outdoor activities include elephant tour around the campus, two wheel oxcart riding, trekking by the Mae Waang River and a swim in the Mae Waang waterfall. The home of Chiang Mai Thai Doll Products is located in Sanpatong. The irresistible doll collection features traditional Thai dolls in both Thai costume and Hilltribe costume and the dancing dolls with intricately designed costumes. A tobacco curing farm from the 1950s has been renovated and • opened as the Kaomai (Gao Mhai) Lanna Resort and Restaurant. Located at the km 29 marker, the buildings and landscape decoration create a dramatic leisurely hideaway for visit a dramatic leisurely hideaway for visitors. Wiang Tha Karn (Garn) is an ancient walled city that dates back to the Haripoonchai period, built before the advent of King Mengrai, the first of the Lanna Kings. The main historic site is near the center of modern-day Baan Tha Karn, close to the school and the village temple, Wat Tha Karn. The best-preserved of the ruins are the pagoda and the foundations of the wiharn, constructed from bricks and laterite. Historical objects found in the town are Buddha images made from sandstone or ceramics, while some are engraved images. Fragments of ancient bricks and ceramic tiles can still be found within the precincts of the old city. Baan Tha Karn is about 34 kilometers to the south of Chiang Mai. Follow the Chiang Mai - Hod Road until you reach Baan Tung Siew in Sanpatong District. Turn left at this village and Baan Tha Karn is some 2 kilometers from the intersection.

Just over 43 kilometers from Chiang Mai, on the road to Hod , Highway 108, is one of the oldest temples in the north. Wat Phra That (Thart) Doi Noi in Chom Thong District. The temple was built by Queen Jamathewee in 658 AD. Among the historic sites are the Phra Borommathart Khong Pra, a stupa with a hidden underground cell, the Bodh and the Wiharn, and Buddha images carved from marble. The ancient temple itself is wonderfully located on a hill, close to the Ping River, and affords superb all-round views of the surrounding hills and valleys of Chiang Mai.

About one kilometer before Chom Thong turn right on to Highway 1009 and locate a large sign in English for Doi Inthanon at the turn. Continue 8 kilometers where the road forks, and keep to the right where the park entrance can be seen. Maps and useful information are available.

There is a Tourist Information Center about 9 kilometers along Route 1009, which leaves the Chiang Mai - Hod Highway just before Chom Thong's town center and heads over Doi Inthanon to Mae Chaem. Just one kilometer or so past the entrance the Information Center is on the left. It stages exhibitions including ones on the natural environment and native wild animals found living on Doi Inthanon. For an informative escort, visitors can request an accompanying park ranger by visiting personally. Many exhibits and a slide show in English about the park are on display. There are also stiff fines for those who break park rules (such as picking flowers) that need to be known. The park rules are written on the back of the map and brochures.

In the Angkga - Inthanon mountain range, close to the Mae Glang waterfall, is the huge Borijinda Cave. To reach the cave, turn right off the Chiang Mai - Hod route at km. 58, on the road to the waterfall. After 8 kilometers turn right and keep going 1 kilometer toward Doi Inthanon. There one will find a sign pointing to the cave. Before the cave, there is a sign with the history of the cave's discovery. Many kilometers deep, the cave has many beautiful stalactites and stalagmites, appropriately called Nom Pha, or milk of the cliff, in the northern Thai language.

There is a Buddha image in the cave, and an underground stream of such purity that light sparkles from the surface like a million diamonds. The roof has collapsed in places and much of the cave is flooded with sunlight. When exploring, be sure to bring your own flashlight with extra batteries.

The Wachiratharn Waterfall is a large cascade which plummets over the edge of a high cliff into a deep pool below. Opposite the fall is a tall and precipitous cliff called Pha Mon Kaew or, more lyrically, Pha Gorn Kaew. The waterfall, some 750 meters above sea level, which was formerly called Tad Kong Yong, is an excellent picnic spot. To get there, turn right off the main road up Doi Inthanon at about 21 kilometers, then follow the signpost to the waterfall a further 350 meters on foot. At km 20 a new road is under construction to reduce the walk to the waterfalls.

Take a right turn at around 30 kilometers up the main Doi Inthanon road and drive a further 2 kilometers along the all-weather road. After a 200 meter uphill walk, you will come to the beautiful, delicate Siripoom Waterfall. This is in fact a pair of falls which plunge from a towering cliff. The best view is from the Hmong Village of Baan Lao Lee, after which the falls were originally named.

The Doi Inthanon Park Headquarters is located at km 31, and visitors get more information about what to do and see in the park. This is the area for camping, and tents are available on a pre-booked basis. Visitors can get the keys for their cabins. Beside the main road over Doi Inthanon is the Royal Project Station in Baan Khun Klang (Glang), quite close to the National Park Office. This project was initiated in 1979 as part of His Majesty the King's efforts to help the hilltribes to cultivate cash crops other than opium, to introduce them to modern agricultural practices and to help them protect forests and river catchments.

This particular station has responsibility for research into temperate . zone plant species as well as providing agricultural advice and support for 510 neighborhood Karen and Hmong families.

Between km. 41 and 42 are two fine opportunities for experiencing nature along the whole of the road over Doi Inthanon. At about the 41 km marker is one of the finest views to be had from Thailand's highest peak. A short walk of about 30 meters from the left side of the road gives the viewer a chance to see a sea of mist filling the valley below. A little further on, at about km 42, is the nature trail called Gew Mae Paan. This short trail, winding through tall pristine forest for about 2.5 kilometers, a 3-hour walk, allows the hiker to experience the natural beauty of the forest at first hand.

This is where to see warblers and kingfishers as they feed on insects in the bushes. Travelers wishing to use this path should seek permission from the National Park Office at km. 31, not only for their own safety, but also to ensure that no damage is caused to the precious environment. NOTE: Every year from June 1 to October 31 the area is closed to the public.

For a truly splendid view from Doi Inthanon, as well as gaining insight into the reverence of the Thai people for their Royal Family, visit the twin pagodas Phra Mahathart Napametaneedon and Phra Mahathart Napapol Poomisiri. These beautiful structures were built by the Royal Thai Air Force and the people of Thailand to commemorate the 5th cycle birthdays (one cycle being 12 years) of Their Majesties the King and Queen The first of these pa godas, erected on the occasion of The King's 60th birthday in 1987, is 50 meters wide and 60 meters tall. Inside a Buddha relic and an image of the Buddha is housed.

The second monument honoring The Queen's 60th birthday in 1992, is of a similar size (37 meters wide and 55 meters tall) and design, twelve-sided, with verandas at two levels. The Buddha image is a massive jade carving, over 3 meters tall and weighing 4 tons. All visitors entering the chedi should dress politely wearing either long pants or skirt, and shirt or blouse as appropriate. Refreshments and lunch can be purchased here. Just behind the lavender-colored chedi dedicated to Queen Sirikit, the Gew Mae Paan nature trail begins. There is no marker but it is easy to find.

Mae - Yah Waterfall at the junction of Chiang Mai - Chom Thong route, then turn right at the KM 56 - 57 marker about 1 km., then turn left and keep going about 7 kms. Here visitors can picnic at the area's tallest waterfall at about 250 meters high. The fresh water splashes down over 30 tiers of rocks and boulders into small clear pools. The water source is from the nearby Doi Inthanon National Park.

Wat Phra Thart Sri Chom (Jour) Thong is 58 kilometers from Chiang Mai located on the road (Highway 108) before the market and Chom Thong district office. This temple dates from the mid -1400s. The temple houses a collection of bronze Buddha images, and the secondary chapel contains a holy Buddha relic.

Mae Tia Waterfall stands at a height of 80 meters and is 15 meters wide. The water cascades down four tiers and flows for about five kms in distance. It's an adventure to travel for three hours from the Doi Kaew National Park guardhouse. To get there follow highway 108 from Chiang Mai to Chom Thong then turn right near the ampur office near Sobtia temple. Travel by the Hod local bus to Chom Thong and then hire a motor cycle to the waterfall entrance. A bus service to the waterfall is available for visitors.

To see traditional homespun cotton production, a visit to Baan Rai Pai Ngam (Ngaam) is recommended. These highly reputable products ' can be found beyond 6 the district town of Chom (Jour) Thong, 1. between 68 and 69 kilometers from Chiang Mai on the road to Hod. Take a left turn onto a bamboo-shaded road and proceed for about 1 kilometer to reach the village. The former home of Mrs. Saengda Baansith, a former National Artist. The cotton is produced exclusively by a group of village housewives who had been taught the techniques of dyeing the fabric with natural pigments by Mrs. Saengda. On the banks of the Ping River is a small museum dedicated to her work and the traditional tools that she used are on exhibition. Tel. 053-361231, 053-361480, 053-273625.

Ob Luang is a picturesque gorge about 105 kilometers from Chiang Mai provincial capital and it is framed by teak forests and mountains. During the rainy season, the flowing rapids crashing on the boulders and through the ravine . are a dramatic picture of nature's strength. A bridge connects the two sides of the narrow, steep gorge. The National Park Office has tents and sleeping equipment for visitors to rent at modest prices. For a cool and shady stop, deep in the heart of nature on the southern route to Mae Sarieng, take a break at Hod Resort by the river, just 4 kilometers up the read leading from Hod. There are 15 separate guest chalets and a restaurant to cater for both visitors and overnight guests.

Take a boat ride or go rafting on Doi Tao Lake formerly a part of the Ping River until the construction of the Bhu mibol Dam in Tak Province. This great body of water offers recreational opportunities during the rainy and cool seasons, from July to December. To reach the lake take Highway 108 (the Hod road) from Chiang Mai. After travelling some 90 kilometers, turn left onto Highway 1130 and proceed 35 kilometers to Doi Tao town. Apartfrom the boats and rafts, food and drink are readily available. Lake craft are available for hire in four different categories.

The largest boats, that routinely ply the length of the lake as far as the dam itself, are the Edelweiss, Tel. 02- 931208790, 02- 9313810-4 and the Phetsuwan, Tel. 053- 469069, which offer a rate of 3-4,000 Baht per person inclusive of food and accommodation. Smaller boats can be arranged at Doi Tao harbor, and rates must be negotiated according to distance to be travelled and the number of passengers. There are 5 large rafts that can hold 40 to 50 people. Rates range from 200-300 Baht for a room for 2 persons, up to 2,500 Baht for dormitory lodging. There are smaller rafts able to carry 15 or 20 people and offering rates about half of those charged by their larger cousins. Arrangements must be made at the wharf. During the dry season, from January till June, arrange boat rides at Bhumibol Dam in Tak province.

About 16 kilometers from Mae Chaem (Jaem) town, on the road leading to Doi Inthanon, can be found the awesome Mae Pan Waterfall. There is a sign at the roadside directing the traveller to these falls, the highest in Chiang Mai. Take the sign-posted road and follow it for 9 kilometers, then a 10 minute walk will bring you to the falls. Surging over a 100-meter-high cliff, the white of the racing water stands out dramatically against the deep green of the surrounding forest. As the water hits the rocks below, a million tiny split the sunlight into rainbow colors and soak the vegetation nearby. Downstream from the falls are a series of pools where the traveller can swim in the chilly mountain waters. The covered public rest house, on a mound close by the falls, affords a shady place to sit and enjoy a panoramic view of the waterfall.

Quite close to the Mae Pan falls can be found the powerful, year-round Huay Sai Leuang Waterfall. The parkinc area is close by and shelters for visitors are plentiful. Although it is a multi-stepped cascade, lacking the drama of a single drop through space, this waterfall looks very beautiful as it dancesthrough the rocks and trees.

Just 3 kilometers from Mae Chaem town lie the villages of the Dteen Jok Sarong Weavers. Most of the villagers in Tambor Tapaa are skilled in this beautifu hand-loom technique. This unique style of. weaving produces sarongs that are available in a number of elegant designs, and which are remarkably cheap. These garments make unusual and affordable souvenirs. An annual Dteen Jok Festival is held in these villages in the month of January.

Wat Pra Buddha Ern, in Mae Chaem's Tambon Chanc Kerng, is a most unusual temple. The buildings are built on ar island in the center of a square, laterite-block- lined pond. This inundated area is called Utokasima, to distinguish it from ar earthen temple surround, or Khanthasima, although the meaning is the same. Built at about the start of the Rattanakosin Era, over 200 years ago, this remarkable temple is registered by the Fine Arts Department.

Apart from the temple in the pool, there is an old Wiharr with some fine old murals. Sadly the pigments are fading with time, but some of the paintings retain good clarity and definition.

About 160 kilometers south of Chiang Mai city, in Hoc District's Tambon Bor Salee, can be found the 6th Water Source Development Unit, Mae Thoh. In the vicinity of this unit are many interesting sites to visit, including a pond of pure minera water, called Ob Luang, at the junction of the road to Mae Chaem, the Bor Kaew (Gaew) pine forest and villages of both Hmonc and Karen hilltribes. The grounds of the unit's headquarters are beautified by the many experimental plots of temperate-zone flowers, and there are seven individual guesthouses available tc accommodate overnight visitors. Northern Route, Highway 107 (Chiang Mai-Samoeng and Chiang Mai - Fang)

Heading north out of Chiang - Mai on Route 107, or Chotana Road, to Mae Rim, you will come to Rama IX Lanna Park (Suan Ror Gao). In this spacious park can be found the Hilltribe Museum run by the Hilltribe Research Institute, a part of the Public Welfare Department. This ethnological museum has collections illustrating the cultures of 10 tribal groups or subgroups: the Hmong, Karen, Mien, Akha, Lisu, Lahu, Lua, Thin, Khamu and Mla Bree. There are exhibitions of their life-styles, their customs, beliefs and education, using only materials derived from the tribal people's own hands. Such is the quality of the material at the museum that it is used as a research and study center.

The building itself is divided into three floors. The first floor has exhibitions of clothing, ornaments, farm tools, musical instruments, basketwork, ceremonial and domestic utensils, and pictures, photographs and statues of the hill people in traditional dress. On the second floor is an exhibition of the history of assistance and development projects targeting the hilltribes, together with these projects' results. Finally on the top floor is a display featuring projects and programs aimed at the tribes-people that have been sponsored and initiated by Their Majesties The King and Queen or by other members of the Royal Family. This museum is not only interesting, but also gives a valuable insight into the lives of the hill dwellers of Northern Thailand. Tel. 053-210872.

Two of the many fine 18-hole golf courses that surround Chiang Mai are on the road to Mae Rim. The Lanna Golf Club Tel. 053-221911, 053-211556, is just 6 kilometers from the city center, on the left-hand side of Route 107, while Chiang Mai Green Valley Country Club, Tel. 053-298249, 053-298249-51, is on the right of the highway, 16 kilometers from the center of town. Both these splendid 18-hole courses are open to visitors.

A mere 6 kilometers from the center of Chiang Mai, on Route 107 to Fang, is the Thai Celadon Factory, which produces the beautiful glazed celadon-ware, still made using the same methods and designs of former times. The Darapirom Royal Residence Museum is in the Dara Rasamee Military Camp in Mae Rim. The early 1900's residence was expertly restored Princess Dara Rasamee was a northern Thai Consort of King Rama V. The museum exhibits the gracious living quarters, textiles, personal utensils, and musical instruments. Open daily from 09.00 - 17.00. Entrance Charge : Adult Baht 20, Child Baht 10. Turn left onto the old Mae Rim-Samoeng Road. Two more choices of accommodation are located here. Mae Rim Lagoon, a family-class hotel, is on the left side sitting on the edge of a man-made lake about 1.5 kilometers from the main road. Five hundred meters east is the Regent Resort Chiang Mai. The attractive design " is a contemporary form of northern architecture with plenty of luxurious outlets such as spa, health club, tennis courts, swimming pool and restaurants. Tel. 053-298181.

On the left side before turning right to the driveway of the Regent Resort Chiang Mai, Tita Gallery offers impressionist and contemporary paintings. Tel. 053-298373.

Through the driveway and over the hill two galleries are located across from the entrance of the Regent Resort Chiang Mai. Lanna House, Tel. 053-861257, specializes in art and antique. Meanwhile, Studio Naenna Textile Gallery, Tel. 053-298151, represents "Weavers for the Environment" silk and cotton naturally dyed and hand woven by women.

Just after leaving the driveway of the Regent Resort Chiang Mai and stay on the old road, Sai Nam Phung is one of the oldest orchid farms, Tel. 053-297892, 053-297152.

Mae Sa Snake Farm is situated at km 3 of Mae Rim - Samoeng Road. The farm displays snakes from all over Thailand, and studies snake breeding as well. Visitors can see snake shows, and see how venom is extracted from snakes. For daily showtimes: Tel. 053- 860719.

After leaving the surroundings of The Regent Resort Chiang Mai turn left onto Route 1096 to Samoeng. Another 3 kilometers up this road, on the right, is the lovely Mae Sa Golf & Resort, the first stopping point on the winding road through Mae Sa valley. With its many guest rooms, all built in different styles on the rolling wooded hills, its cosmopolitan restaurant and its own 9-hole golf course, Mae Sa Resort, is an ideal, selfcontained, getaway spot. Chateau Kum - Line (Oon) Art Museum is located approximately at km. 4 at the edge of the road on the right. It is a collection of art and antique objects, unususal to find in presentday Chiang Mai. Across from the private museum, Bungy Jump, Tel. 053-298442, 01-7831900, providing great excitement for sports lovers. The daring adventure jump from the 50 meter high tower over the water pool is closely supervised by experts for safety.

Less than one kilometer from Chateau Kum Line, a small road on the right leads to Taad Mork Waterfall after a further 9 kilometers. It is a medium sized waterfall and surrounded more by nature than others. Visitors will love this romantic and peaceful place.

Orchid and Butterfly Farms and major flower nurseries are located along Mae Rim - Samoeng route (No 1096). Each provide opportunities for visitors to admire these exotic year- round blooms.

Certain orchid farms also have special butterfly enclosures where tropical species can be seen in a natural environment. Visitors can buy jewelry items made from gold plated orchids and insects.

Mae Sa Waterfall, an 8-tiered tumbling cascade, is 26 kilometers from town and occupies a natural setting among gigantic towering trees. Travel on the Mae Rim - Samoeng road, turn left directly at km. 7 and enter the area of the national park. This waterfall is one of

the most famous in Mae Rim district. The Mae Sa waterfall is divided into levels, rising in 8 stages up the

slope of the foothills. The entire area is for ested with large trees which provide cool shade year-round. The fall is a favorite recreation spot for the people of Chiang Mai and visitors alike.

Elephant shows are very popular with visitors to the North. The usual format comprises elephants bathing and playing in the river, a display of elephants at work and an opportunity to take an elephant-back ride. There is usually a separate fee for riding the elephants in addition to the entrance fee. These shows are all -" the more impressive as every effort has been made to minimize damage to the forest, creating a natural environment.

Elephant shows can be seen in many different places in and around Chiang Mai. Mae Sa Elephant Camp, 053-206247, 053-206248 is 10 kilometers north on the Mae Rim - Samoeng road, Route 1096 and has a show from 09.40 - 11.30 daily. In the opposite direction, about 70 kilometers south of Chiang Mai towards Lampang, is the Thai Elephant Conservation Center, located in Baan Tung Kwien (Thoong - Gwian), Hang Chat District. Queen Sirikit Botanical Garden is located at km 12 of Old Samoeng route and covers an area of 560 acres. It was established in April 1992 in order to gather, conserve, and strengthen studies and research on Thai plants and an extensive library in the main building. Mae Sa Valley Resort is located at approximately km. 12 on the left-hand side. The easily accessible lavish green hilly forest area attracts both Thai and foreign visitors alike. The gardens are planted with many varieties of flowers appropriate to the elevation amid private guest rooms. A restaurant offers selections of European, Thai and Khantoke dinner menus.

The New Baan Hmong Mae Sa: Turn right directly at km 12. This is a Hmong hilltribe village located at 1,000 meters above sea level. The villagers continue to follow their age-old life-style wearing their costumes and selling handmade items as souvenirs to visitors. The steep terrain calls for mules to transport vegetables from the growing area to their communal market in their village.

Erawan Resort: Turn right at km 15 and drive through the premises for about one kilometer. Surrounding the lake inside there are many bungalows and chalets in a comfortable atmosphere. The restaurant serves Thai and local food. It's best to call in advance for reservations. Tel. 053-879084.

One of the many beautiful waterfalls on the way fror Chiang Mai to Samoeng is the Mae Yim Waterfall. A sign i posted to the right of the road at Rai Kanesadal.

Just by the roadside, 19 kilometers along the Mae Rim - Samoeng road, is the shady Chiang Mai Resort in its lovely natural setting. There are rooms, restaurant service and a small conference room for up to 30 participants.

Keep going on Rte 1096, there will be Samoeng district and Samoeng Resort as mentioned earlier. Then return back to Rte. 107, it is the area of Mae Rim, Mae Taeng, Chiang Dao respectively.

The Thai Buffalo Training Camp is situated on 21 rai of magnificent farmland amid natural breezes and earthy fragrances. This is where honest and truthful buffalo work for steadfast farmers in Mae Rim. Visitors see the age old agrarian methods of sugar processing, ploughing the rice paddy and water wheel irrigation. Construction of the Royal Irrigation Department's, Mae Ngud Som Boonchon. Dam with its cool, clean waters, was completed in 1985. Just after Mae Taeng, 41 kilometers from Chiang Mai on the road to Fang, take a right turn and drive a further 11 kilometers. The pretty Mok (Morg) Fa Waterfall is just off the Mae Malai to Pai, route 1095. Take a left turn onto the gravel road after 20 kilometers, and proceed for another 2 kilometers. Although the volume of water is small, the river feeding the fall flows year-round. This is a shady and peaceful picnic spot.

Mon Angked is over 2 hours drive from Chiang Mai. The scenery there is stunningly beautiful and there are many other things to see, such as a mushroom nursery and an open zoo. Seven "tree-house" style rooms are available for overnight visitors. Turn off the Chiang Mai -Fang Road (km 38) at Mae Malai market and follow the road to Pai, Rte. 1095, for about 30 kilometers. Turn off this road and then proceed a further 15 kilometers, following the signs posted at the road side.

Pong Derd Pa Pae is a hot spring in Mae Taeng District. It is the largest hot spring in Thailand with the main geyser shooting up to 4 meters in the air. There is an intense smell of sulphur in the vicinity of the spring as the surrounding dense forest cuts down the strength of the wind. To get there, turn left from the Chiang Mai -Fang road at Mae Malai intersection, (about 38 kilometers from Chiang Mai) and proceed on Mae Malai - Pai Road, Rte. 1095, for 44 kilometers. Make a right turn onto a laterite road and proceed a further 6.5 kilometers. A walk of about 500 meters leads to this impressive spring. It is best to visit the site during the dry season.

Almost 4 hours by car from downtown Chiang Mai is Huay Naam Dang National Park. To reach this little-known spot, follow the Mae Malai to Pai road, Rte. 1095, for 66 kilometers and then take the well-marked right turn and go on for another 7 kilometers. The scenery around the four guest bungalows is marvellous and there are beds of temperate flowers, many waterfalls and a Lisu hilltribe village.

One of the finest viewpoints in the park is Doi Gew Lom, near the Watershed Development Office. This viewing spot is at its best at dawn when the rising sun illuminates the sea of mist below. Other places to visit are Doi Chang, in the northern part of the park, and the 50-meter high Huay Naam Dang Waterfall. The Royal Ping Garden and Resort in Mae Taeng District, is 52 kilometers from Chiang Mai on the road to Fang, Rte. 107. The resort is located on the banks of the Ping River and enfolded by mountains. This is a resort that is truly in the heart of nature. The buildings are made of imported cedar. About 56 kilometers from Chiang Mai, on the road going to Fang, is the Taeng Dao Elephant Camp. There are 2 daily 1 hour shows, starting at 09.00 and 10.00, that include elephants bathing and hauling logs. Entrance fee is 60 Baht and an elephant-back ride can be had for an additional 200 Baht per hour. Rafting on the Ping River is available for more energetic individuals. Heading north from Chiang Mai towards Fang, you will reach Pa Gia. There is splendid scenery here at the southern end of Chiang Dao, with its mist-filled valleys, and there are a great many things do and see. There is a Hmong village where the visitor may learn of their culture and traditions. See many temperate flowers in a riot of colors, and an experimental coffee plantation. There are guesthouses for rent and food is available. Turn left off route 107 heading north at km. 67 and then drive a further 21 kilometers into the hills. Reservations can be made at the Watershed Conservation Section of the Royal Forestry Department, Bangkok, 02- 5797587.

Doi Chiang Dao, one of Thailand's most impressive mountains, lies in the Doi Chiang Dao Wildlife Reserve. To get there, follow Route 107 from Chiang Mai to Fang then turn off to the left after 77 kilometers and drive to Chiang Dao Cave.

Villagers there act as guides and can be hired as porters for the long, hard climb through the dense forest to the remote mountain top.

North of Chiang Dao, at about km 95 on route 107, is the Royal Project Huay Leuk. The project is on the right, about 500 meters from the road. The project's responsibility is to provide land and technical advice for the Hmong and Karen hilltribe farmers in the area, especially through promotion, research and plant breeding.

Many kinds of vegetables, flowers and fruit are grown in the project, and these are available for sale, i.e. greens for salad cantaloupe, Chrysanthemum, peacock flowers, pomegranate guava, etc. It is best to visit in the winter season from November to March when the variety and quantity of produce grown is a its greatest amount. Chiang Dao Hill Resort, also called Rai Cheewan, is found in its beautiful natural setting, some 100 kilometers north of Chiang Mai, on route 107, the road to Fang. Information about this resort can be obtained by calling Tel. 053- 232434, 053-234955.

Tab Tao Cave can be found 3 kilometers to the lef of the Chiang Mai - Fang road at about km. 122. Although smaller than the better known Chiang Dao cave, Tab Tao cave '' matches it in beauty. In side the cave there are a number of Buddha images. The cave is divided into 2 smaller caves called Pa Khao and Pan Jek. At the cave's entrance is a Buddhist Monastery and a pavilion.

Huay Naam Roo, also called Saam Meun, is it Tambon Muang Kong in Chiang Dao District, about 130 kilome ters north of Chiang Mai city or about 4 hours by car. In the midst of the beautiful scenery, there can be seen a Lisu village fields of opium poppies kept as a demonstration site, and plan tations of coffee and fruit trees from temperate climates. Then are 4 guesthouses, each with hot-water heater, with food an( drink available. The access road is not surfaced and is only suit able for use in the dry months. Doi Angkhang Mountain: On Royal Highway no 107 (Chiang Mai - Fang) at approximately km. 137, there is a left-hand turning which enters into Yaang Village at Thada Mar ket. Continue for another 26 kilometers. The road is paved it some parts and rises to a high elevation. This is the area o activity of Royal Project Doi Angkhang Agricultural Station whict conducts research on temperate climate fruits and flowers, conducts demonstrations of field crops, and oil-bearing crops of sufficient value for the hilltribes to plant instead of opium.

Inside the Doi Angkhang agricultural station there is the Angkhang Nature Resort, with 74 rooms, which is privately administered for tourists.

Just 3 kilometers before reaching Fang District town, or 144 kilometers from Chiang Mai, is the Fang Oil Well. A visit is most informative, and can be arranged through the Director of the Northern Petroleum Development Center in Fang by calling Tel. 053-451261-2,053-452007-9.

North of Fang town, towards Mae Ai, is beautiful Doi Poo Meun. Some 174 kilometers from Chiang Mai city, this mountain is well known for its spectacular scenery, especially views of Doi Pa Hom Pok. An additional drive of 14 kilometers brings you to the mountain. Take a trip 8 kilometers northwest of Fang and visit Fang Hot Spring in Tambon Baan Pin. The water, bubbling up from the hot granite rocks below is almost at boiling point and eggs can be hard-boiled for your picnic. The rolling steam and sulphurous odors can be overpowering when standing there.

Doi Pha Luang Pha Hom Pok is about 180 kilometers from downtown Chiang Mai or about 5 hours drive. Famous for its flowers and the remarkable scenery in the forest and on the trail to the peak, this lovely mountain is also home to many hilltribes. By road, it can be reached by driving 20 kilometers from Fang towards Mae Ai, then turn left and continue for a further 20 kilometers.

Only 24 kilometers north of Fang, one arrives at Tha Ton (Thatorn) straddling the Mae Kok river. This river is regularly used by ferries plying the route from Mae Ai to Chiang Rai. Longtail boats can be hired for the journey from Tha Ton to downtown Chiang Rai for 160 Baht per person. Leaving at 12.30, the boat reaches Chiang Rai some four-and-a-half hours later.

This trip has long been very popular with tourists as it gives the opportunity to enjoy the glorious scenery of the northern outdoor and to observe the everyday life of the river folk. Occupying an area of 60 hectares, and spread over several rolling hills, Wat Tha Ton sits high on the banks of the Mae Kok river. From the many ancient objects found in the temple grounds, it is assumed that this is a site of great antiquity. Amidst the beautiful scenery in the temple grounds are schools for both young boys and for monks, a drug treatment center and a hilitribe support unit. In honor of His Majesty the King's 50 years on the throne, the temple is building a hilltop glass stupa.

Northeastern Route, Highway 1001 (Chiang Mai - Prao)

Heading northeast out of Chiang Mai is Route 1001 to Prao. At about Km. 26, turn right and proceed for 4 kilometers Royal Chiangmai Golf Resort, Tel. 053-849301-6, with the green course of 18 holes. Getting back to Route 1001, this scenic highway eventually brings the traveller to the enormous Sri Lanna National Park. Covering an area of over 100,000 hectares, this huge tract of land includes Mae Ngud, Mae Taeng and Chiang Dao forests. The wild life is abundant in this largely undisturbed wilderness of roll ing mountains, which is the source of the Mae Ping river. There are many places of special interest that can be visited in this huge park. These include Mon Hin Lai Waterfall, close tc the park's main entrance, with its six separate spectacular cascades.

Bua Tong Waterfall and its remarkable seven-colored spring is 47 kilometers from Chiang Mai, or the road to Prao. The spring water is rich in calcium carbonate which L deposited on the stream bed anc flows down the falls in seven distind pastel colors.

Wat Doi Mae Pang is some 75 kilometers from Chiang Mai or Route 1001 to Prao. Its greatest claim to fame is that it was the home to Luang Poo Waen Sujinno, a famous and revered monk, from 1962 until his death in 1985 Many of the buildings are of wooden construction, including the Wiharn and a hermit's cell called Rong Yang Giled or Rong Fai Relics of Luang Poo Waen include his dwelling hut, a picture it the pavilion that shows him meditating, and a square-shaped, spire-roofed museum with his ashes, a beeswax replica of the monk, and his personal effects.

The Doi Farung Bungalow is situated at 203 Moc 1, Baan Pa Nhai, Ampur Prao around 96 kilometers from Chianc Mai city. The natural geography in this remote area is the back ground for Thai style guesthouses and bungalows. Facilities in. clude a restaurant and swimming pool. Lower Eastern Route, Highway 1006 (Chiang Mai - Sankhampaeng)

Less than 2 kilometers from the highway intersection, a small road on the right side toward the very old northern temple, only 50 meters from the main road. The interior murals of Wat Buagkrok Luang show the scenes of former Thai Lanna.

After this old temple, is a garden restaurant amid Lannz nature Le Grand Lanna Restaurant, Tel. 053-262569, facilities for large garden parties with northern Thai hospitality and flair.

Long known as the heart of the handicraft industry is Bo Sang (Sarng) Village where many families produce umbrellas, handmade sa paper products, fine celadons, silkand textiles, woodcarving, and silver ware. It's a 9 Kilometer drive from the city.

Wat Pa Tung (Teung) is in Orn Tai Subdistrict, District of Sankampaeng. Built on the site of a longdeserted monastery, many valuable objects were discovered during the preparations for constructing the present-day temple. These included ancient artifacts, Buddha images and Sangkhalok pottery. Shards and pieces of pottery have been found in the surrounding hills.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand and Sankampaeng Cooperative Village collaborated in making improvements to the surroundings of Sankampaeng Hot Spring so that it could become a popular recreation area very near to Chiang Mai city. The spring is 34 kilometers from downtown Chiang Mai by either the old Sankampaeng road or the newer bypass. The older road passes close by Muang On Cave. To get there by "Song Taew" from Sankampaeng town costs about 200 Baht. Near the spring are rest houses, tents, camping grounds and hot spring water tubs for soaking. Close to Sankampaeng Hot Spring is Rung Arun (Roong Aroon) Resort. It has its own hot spring and geyser in beautifully landscaped surroundings, including trees, flowers and a natural stone garden. Chiang Mai has a wealth of folk artisans such as the Baan Chang Nag where the imagination of the artists turn a chunk of wood into unbelievable renditions of elephants. Visitors will find elephants of every size and majestic stance made. All beautiful items to use for decoration and personal use. Baan Chang Nag is located at 56/1 Moo 2, Buag Khaang, Sankkampaeng At the Km 60 marker on the Chiang Mai-Sankampaeng highway cross the bridge and turn right at the Buag Khaang Temple. Upper Eastern Route, Highway 1019 (Chiang Mai - Doi Saket)

Route 1019 from Chiang Mai to Doi Saket and Chiangrai, before the distance pole, Km.13, (or 12 kms distance from the City Court intersection), turn left and follow the sign 1.7 km from the highway, it is the field of Chiang Mai Sky Adventure the only microlight flying center in the north. Visit Doi Saket Temple to view the magnificent Dhamma Puzzle Murals by famous Lanna artists.

Again on this same route, from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai passes through Doi Saket. In this district is the Mae Kuang (Guang) Udomthara Dam near Wang Tarn village. This dam, set amid charming scenery, is a royally-sponsored project that was completed in 1992. It has a capacity of 263 million cubic meters, retained behind a wall that is 73 meters high and 610 meters in length. The water is intended for irrigating the rich farmland of Doi Saket, Sankampaeng and Lamphun. To get there, follow the Chiang Rai road for 20 kilometers, turn left at the prominent sign and follow the side road for 6 kilometers The dam is open to the public from 08.30-16.30 hours.

Close to Mae Kuang Udomthara Dam, and reached by the same road, is Wang Tarn Resort in its lovely natural setting. There are some 30 guest houses for overnight visitors and a restaurant serving food and drink. Facilities include tennis court and swimming pool for guests' use. Call Tel. 053 865655-7.

Nong Bua Phra Jao Luang is a wetland in Cherng Doi subdistrict, Doi Saket District. Covering almost 20 hectares, this natural reservoir was once famous for the large numbers of wildfowl that could be found there. Sadly, the natural swamp dried up, but it is now being restored as an artificial reservoir, replanted with 54 lotus varieties, so that it Can become a new tourist attraction.

His Majesty the King founded the Huay Hong Krai Education Development Center in 1982. Its original purpose was to offer educational courses that were appropriate to the northern river catchment and watershed areas. The Center also aims to promote forestry and agricultural techniques, that will preserve the catchments for posterity, especially in livestock raising, fisheries, con- solidation through planting grasses, and conservation work around Huay Hong Krai. This is a fine place to both enjoy and study nature. The center can be found 23 kilometers from Chiang Mai on the Chiang Rai highway. Turn right and continue a further 1 kilometer to reach the development center.
